Are you interested in learning the basics of successful teaching? Are you considering a career in education?
An OITE workshop, “Scientists Teaching Science: An Introduction to Best Practices in Science Education,” will provide a basic introduction for anyone interested in understanding the basics of learning styles, teaching philosophies and course development. If you interested in a career in education, this workshop is a required prerequisite for admission into a pedagogy course the OITE will offer this spring.
Consider that people have a retention rate of…
5% from listening to lectures
10% from reading for information
20% from audio-visual materials
30% when a demonstration is added
50% from discussing facts in groups
75% from practicing by doing
90% from teaching others at the same time they’re learning the information
SO WHY ONLY LECTURE??
The workshop will be offered to graduate students and postdoc fellows on November 7 from 2:30-4:30pm in Building 1 / Wilson Hall. Sign-up to learn course preparation, common teaching methods, enhancing your teaching effectiveness, and MORE! The course is taught by Barbara Houtz, a nationally-recognized master science teacher with over 12 years’ experience in teaching teachers.
