Dear Colleagues: We are beginning our planning for the 2008 NIH Research Festival, which will be held October 14-17. We are now soliciting your suggestions for topics and speakers for the plenary sessions and mini-symposia/workshops. This is a prime opportunity to showcase exciting areas of discovery and the wide-ranging expertise and resources in our intramural community. We would like your suggestions about the most exciting current areas of intramural research. As usual, we are especially interested in high-risk-high-impact research that takes advantage of the unique intellectual, physical and clinical resources of the IRP. Please consult with your inter-institute scientific Interest Group or Institute colleagues and propose one or more sessions. At this preliminary stage, we do not expect you to make a major time commitment to this planning--just to do some brainstorming and send us your best ideas. To propose a topic, please complete the on-line form: http://researchfestival.nih.gov/symposium/index.html We are requesting a title for the session, a very brief description of its content, and a proposed chairperson. While not required, the names of potential speakers and tentative titles of their presentations would help us evaluate the proposals. Please submit your proposals by completing the on-line form by close-of-business on TUESDAY, APRIL 8, 2008. We especially welcome proposals that bring together basic and clinical/translational research and that involve women and minority scientist presenters. Last year this solicitation received a very good response, with about 55 proposals for 22 symposia. Assuming the same enthusiasm, preference will also be given to topics not well represented in recent years. As in previous years, we expect this year's festival will include other favorite events--posters, the NIH Job Fair for Postdoctoral, Clinical, and Research Fellows, the scientific equipment tent show, and opportunities to enjoy lively entertainment and conversation with colleagues from around the corner or across the campus. Last year’s 20th Anniversary Festival was a resounding success and we welcome your comments and suggestions to make this event as exciting as the previous year. Lee Helman, NCI/CCR, and Ira Levin, NIDDK Co-Chairs, 2008 NIH Research Festival
