Graduate students currently enrolled in a Ph.D. training program come to NIH laboratories to enhance their dissertation research by developing an individual partnership. Currently, we have graduate students in partnerships with more than 100 national and international universities.
Your first step in arranging an individual partnership should be to discuss the possibility with your university mentor and department. In many cases, individual partnership students learned about opportunities at the NIH because of a pre-existing collaboration between their university mentor and an NIH faculty member. Other students discover the NIH independently of their university mentor because of the availability of research resources at the NIH.
Students in Individual Agreements must submit the GPP on-line application for Current Graduate Students. Admission to NIH laboratories by a current Ph.D. graduate student has no deadline. The following are required for admission:
-
Completion of required coursework in a Ph.D. program
-
Letter from department/program chairperson giving permission to perform part or all of the dissertation research at NIH
-
Completion of the GPP application for Current PhD Students
-
Identification of an NIH Investigator for a host laboratory
-
Application for the appropriate visa for non-US citizens
